1:23 am - 2 Loads, 3 of 5 Shots
|
The first shot is weird! First, there is the vapor trail that I'll never figure out why it is there on some shots and not others. Second, right after the shot a white thing comes from behind a tree and zooms off to the left. It's not a bird. It could be a glitch in the camera, whereas it wasn't recording for a split second while a snowflake came into view, then it resumed recording?
But...
The first 3 shots missed left by over a foot and it was not my doing. That load had to go south. A few days ago in about 32ºF while shooting that load, it hit the left edge of the target in a pretty stiff 9 o'clock wind. It could have been the load creeping left due to differing harmonics; or yes, I could have almost misjudged the wind a bit.
So I went to the house, viewed the video, and seeing how far i missed, I figured I'd check the scope mount and rings. They were ok so I grabbed an old winter load that I wasn't sure of the POI height. I took a good guess at a scope setting, then hit just 2 inches high and an inch right of center with the 300 and 400 yard shots.
The scope could have been a bit skewed, then was righted when I checked it, but I bet it was the load I had developed at 85ºF, is no good at 22ºF.

12:08 am - Win94 at 250 Yards
|
This was to display how the 30-30 is sufficient to shoot passed 150 yards. The 8 inch target is the size of a deer kill zone; if I hit it, that is a kill. The 3 inch target is like bonus.
Some info for the doubters...
1) Yes, that bullet has enough energy to kill a deer at this range.
2) Yes, this bullet remains supersonic to 550 yards, with 537ft-lbs energy.
3) No; but enough energy for a varmint like a coyote.
4) Not with this sight, (presently;) but with a scope I could.
5) Yes, this was the only shot taken today.
...
My lever action is "a high powered," rifle; it is being treated as such. The benchmarks when finding effective range are no different than with any other "high powered" rifle.

2:41 am - Cold-Bore, High Wind, 400 Yards, 2
|
Cold-Bore, High Wind, 400 Yards, 2
I wasn't as stable as I should have been before I took the shot. After viewing the video, I noticed that the wind was coming from 3 o'clock down-range; it was mainly coming from 12 o'clock elsewhere. That 3 o'clock wind could have drifted the bullet an inch or so, but I was still high anyway.
The lay of the land makes it so I need to have the rifle a bit higher than what feels comfortable to me; I just need to work on that a bit more.
What is odd... I hit an inch from there on the last cold-bore shot. Actually, I hit an inch from there on my last shot. Maybe my scope is in need of adjusting? Possibly down and right one click... Yes. It has hit in that area more times than not; I have adjusted it.

12:40 am - Win94 With 180gr POIs
|
Taking a shot at 100, 200 and 300 yards in order to figure my POA for those distances. I hit just low on the second notch at 100, just to the right on the fourth notch at 200, and hit on the sixth notch at 300. The sixth notch is the max height, so I'll need a scope to get the full potential of these bullets.
What is kind of cool is, the sight settings are close to 50 yards per notch. Makes it kind of easy.
The sights seemed set a bit right, so I bumped the rear sights left a bit.
My eye is odd, when I get the front sight bead near the center of the peep sight, it elongates slightly and makes for the sight pictures to be inconsistent.

I watched a video of a guy shooting himself not too long ago and wanted to see how well I could do at the range he was shooting from. ... I did a bit better.

4:31 am - 400 Off The Fence
|
If you notice, the target spun a bit and I was shooting at about a 2.25 inch target and a 5 inch backstop. So I didn't do as bad as it seemed.

4:33 am - Forgot About This Place
|
Last time I tried from the prone position it was at 400 yards and I missed. The rifle did fine, it was my mistake so I decided to try a few shots a little closer.
I got a good sight picture and nothing seemed out of place. I will still try a few shorter shots just to see if get a better idea what my problem was last time.
This is a close-up of the Howa's bore.

About a week ago I noticed the sun reflecting off of the back of the bullets I was shooting in the morning so I made a nice video and icon of the effect.

Another installment of "one shot, one day." Today was easy, a constant 4mph wind from 3 o'clock. Hit it solid on the 3.5 inch lid!

1:57 am - Son of a...
|
My first 400 yard shot with the Howa and I miss! Here is why...
Last night I got my drop chart at the Hornady site and wrote the settings in my scope cap so I would be ready to shoot the 400 yard shot. Somehow I wrote the wrong numbers down.
Instead of adjusting 4moa up then dropping down .5moa for uphill wind, what I wrote down as my drop chart said I needed 2 more moa up. That is 8 inches wrong! I hate when I miss; but to know my adjustment after the miss was just .25moa, (1 inch,) from what the drop chart said, makes me ill.
The good thing is; my complimentary scope seems to track better than the expensive one that came so highly recommended. :/

4:55 am - Look What I Got
|
Howa 30-06 with a 22" barrel, a 3x9 x 42 30mm NikkoStirling Diamond illuminated scope.

It was a bit longer than I thought... ;)
The scope has a crystal in the center, which is illuminated by a laser. I'll make a movie of it soon. I just hope it tracks repeatably for over a year.
I see no flaws, it feels nice and solid, love the grip and the way the rubber coated stock grips my hands, (hope it lasts,) and the recoil pad looks pretty nice!
$449
I made cartridges for ladder testing tonight with 180gr Sierra Pro-Hunters and IMR4064 starting at 45gr then going up in 1/5 of a grain intervals.
I hope it shoots!

WARNING: I should also mention; these bullets should be loaded individually directly into the chamber, otherwise you run the risk of discharging the cartridges in the tube mag. They are too long to chamber properly from the mag anyway.
